19th Century American Literary, Historical, and Cultural Studies A directory to websites and resources on the literary and cultural history of the U.S. compiled by Washington State University American Studies.


American Memory The national Digital Library at the Library of Congress includes a very large collection of primary resources and archival materials relating to American history including documents, photographs, movies and sound recordings.

 

American Studies Association Website for the ASA, the nation's "oldest and largest association devoted to the interdisciplinary study of American history and culture."

 

American Studies Web American Studies Crossroads Project sponsored by Georgetown University with a collection of links in numerous subjects including culture studies, race, folklore, science, economy, community studies, and many others.

 

Avalon Project The Avalon Project mounts digital documents relevant to the fields of Law, History, Economics, Politics, Diplomacy and Government from Ancient times up to the present.

 

Cultural Maps in American Studies Cultural Maps is dedicated to the graphical presentation of non-graphical information from the University of Virginia.

 

Documenting the American South Sponsored by the University of North Carolina, DocSouth is a digital publishing initiative that provides Internet access to texts, images, and audio files related to southern history, literature, and culture that includes twelve thematic collections of books, diaries, posters, artifacts, letters, oral history interviews, and songs.

 

Folkstreams The mission of Folkstreams.net is to build a national preserve of documentary films about American folk culture. Produced by independent filmmakers, these hard to find films give voice to the arts and experience of diverse American groups. They are streamed on the website together with background materials that highlight the history and aesthetic importance of the traditions and the films.

 

Humanities Interactive Site features exhibits and interactive multimedia on a variety of American topics.

 

LIFE Photo Archive millions of photographs from the LIFE photo archive, most were never published and are now available for the first time through the joint work of LIFE and Google.

 

Making of America A digital library of primary sources in American social history from the antebellum period through reconstruction. The collection is particularly strong in education, psychology, American history, sociology, religion, and science and technology.

 

NUCMC This site from the Library of Congress provides keyword searching of descriptions of manuscript collections in American libraries. It is extremely useful for locating the primary papers of an individual as well as letters to and from the individual in other people's papers.

 

Online Exhibits from the National Archives Collections include photographs, oral histories, and documents from NARA's vast collections.

 

Popular Culture: Resources for Critical Analysis Resources include sites on various forms of popular culture including music, film, television, advertising, sports, fashion, toys, magazines and comic books, and the medium in which this message moves, cyberculture.


Social Movements and Culture A directory of websites on the study of social movements in the U.S. with an emphasis on recent and contemporary movements.
